A new UK-wide initiative is gathering perspectives from Black and mixed Black heritage communities to identify key research priorities in lung and respiratory health.

The Equal Breath Project is a UK-wide initiative led by the MRC Black in Biomedical Research Advisory Group and Asthma + Lung UK, supported by the Centre for Research Equity. The project aims to address respiratory health inequalities affecting children and adults of Black and mixed Black heritage.

Using the James Lind Alliance Priority Setting Partnership method, the initiative brings together people with lived experience, their carers and loved ones, and healthcare practitioners to identify the most important unanswered research questions about lung health. The findings will help shape future research and policy so they better reflect the needs and priorities of Black communities across the UK.

Two surveys are currently open until 15 December 2025. The organisers are seeking responses from individuals with lived experience and from healthcare and social care professionals working with Black and mixed Black heritage communities affected by lung and respiratory conditions.

The surveys are open to adults, carers, and healthcare professionals of Black or mixed Black heritage, as well as those working with Black communities affected by lung and respiratory conditions.
