Welcome to the Centre for Research Equity through Pharmacy, Communities and Healthcare
The Centre for Research Equity (CfRE) is an independent, non-profit coalition of community advocates, pharmacy teams, researchers, pharma and health industry, academics, and regulators.
Our Mission
The CfRE's mission is to advance the understanding of and improve inclusive research practice and community engagement in health and care research.
The centre is based in the University of Oxford's Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences.
What we do
- Provide support and training for research staff to increase health equity.
- Evidence the benefits for community-based recruitment and trial design.
- Build on the evidence base around the determinants of health inequalities, and propose methods and research designs to improve outcomes for all.
- Support inclusive community engagement, involvement and participation in research.
Our Principles
- Equity: Research should be conducted in a way that is fair and just for all participants, regardless of their race, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, or other factors.
- Inclusion: Research should be conducted in a way that includes the voices and perspectives of all stakeholders, including those who have been traditionally marginalized or excluded from research.
- Relevance: Research should be conducted in a way that is relevant to the needs of the communities it seeks to serve.
- Rigour: Research should be conducted in a way that is scientifically rigorous and ethical.
Equity
Equity is fairness and justice.
Where 'equality' means providing the same to all, equity means recognising that we do not all start from the same place and must acknowledge and make adjustments to imbalances.
Pharmacy
Pharmacies are trusted community-based healthcare settings that can be used to recruit and enroll diverse populations in research. Pharmacy teams can also provide education and support to participants, and help to ensure that research results are translated into practice.
Community
Engaging diverse communities in clinical research is crucial to ensure that research findings can be applied to all populations. Including underrepresented groups also helps address health disparities and promotes equity in healthcare.
Healthcare
Equity in healthcare research means that everyone has an equal opportunity to participate in and benefit from research. This includes ensuring that research is conducted in a way that is inclusive of all communities, and that the results of research are used to improve the health of all people.
Join us and our work
We recognise that it's important to engage with a diverse range of voices and perspectives to ensure that research is inclusive and representative of all populations.
CfRE membership is based on expertise and commitment toward better and meaningful inclusion in research inside and outside of member organisations. CfRE seeks to have a balanced representation of stakeholders to ensure transparency, inclusiveness, diversity and credibility.
By partnering with these organisations, we can better understand the needs of underrepresented populations and address health disparities through research.
We welcome membership from institutions, organisations and enterprises that support a better future for the population and are looking for new members with the commitment, passion, and expertise to drive equity in research.

The Centre for Research Equity is an evolving resource that we hope to build based on the needs and feedback of our members and partners.
We are committed to providing the best possible support for researchers who are working to advance equity in healthcare. Our website will be a valuable tool for researchers, and we are always looking for ways to make it more user-friendly, informative, and above all, practical.
We welcome feedback from our members and partners, and we will use it to improve resources and information.
