Professor Mahendra Patel, Head of the Centre for Research Equity through Pharmacy, Communities and Healthcare at the University of Oxford, has recently been awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Bradford.
Prof Patel grew up near the University of Bradford campus, even playing on the construction site as a child. He later graduated with a pharmacy degree and PhD from the university.
The new honorary doctorate recognises Prof Patel's significant contributions as a pharmacist, educator, and researcher. He has worked extensively to improve health outcomes and reduce inequities, especially in underserved communities.
Prof Patel pioneered a national program engaging healthcare students with the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence. He also helped establish the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (following the splitting of the previous embodiment of the society) and has held multiple leadership roles there.
Additionally, Prof Patel is a patron of the Commonwealth Pharmacy Association, a UNESCO faculty member, and an honorary ambassador for the Lebanese Pharmacists Association. Last year he was awarded an OBE for services to pharmacy.
Upon receiving the honorary degree, Prof Patel reflected on his father's pride in his accomplishments and encouraged graduates to be inclusive and bring others along in their careers.
The University of Bradford honoured one of its most distinguished alumni for a lifetime of leadership and service in the field of pharmacy. Prof. Patel continues this work as director of Oxford's Centre for Research Equity.
